Natural Gas Benefits and Considerations

Whether produced via conventional or renewable methods, the advantages of natural gas as an alternative fuel include its domestic availability, established distribution network, relatively low cost, and emissions benefits.

Renewable natural gas (RNG) and conventional natural gas, must be compressed (CNG) or liquefied (LNG) for use in vehicles. Like any alternative fuel, there are some considerations to take into account when contemplating the use of natural gas.

Energy Security

In 2018, the United States consumed approximately 20.45 million barrels of petroleum per day, about 11% of which was imported. Because transportation accounts for nearly three-quarters of total U.S. petroleum consumption, using domestic fuels like natural gas can have a direct impact. This not only supports the U.S. economy but helps diversify the U.S. transportation fleet and reduce the impact of international supply disruptions. All of this adds to our nation's energy security.

Vehicle Performance

Natural gas vehicles (NGVs) are similar to gasoline or diesel vehicles with regard to power, acceleration, and cruising speed. The driving range of NGVs is generally less than that of comparable gasoline and diesel vehicles because, with natural gas, less overall energy content can be stored in the same size tank. Extra natural gas storage tanks or the use of LNG can help increase range for larger vehicles.

In heavy-duty vehicles, dual-fuel, compression-ignited engines are slightly more fuel-efficient than spark-ignited dedicated natural gas engines. However, a dual-fuel engine increases the complexity of the fuel-storage system by requiring storage of both types of fuel and the integration of diesel aftertreatment devices.

Lower Emissions

All new vehicles are equipped with effective emission control systems and must meet the same emissions standards, regardless of fuel type. Consequently, tailpipe emissions from natural gas vehicles are comparable to those of gasoline and diesel vehicles equipped with modern emissions controls. According to Argonne National Laboratory’s Greenhouse Gases, Regulated Emissions, and Energy Use in Transportation (GREET) model, light-duty vehicles running on conventional and shale natural gas can reduce life cycle greenhouse gas emissions by 15% (84% if running on RNG). In addition, because CNG fuel systems are completely sealed, the vehicles produce no evaporative emissions.

Natural gas produced via renewable methods offers additional benefits. Renewable natural gas (RNG) is essentially biogas—the gaseous product of the decomposition of organic matter—that has been processed to purity standards. Capturing biogas from landfills and livestock operations reduces emissions by preventing methane release into the atmosphere. Methane is 25 times stronger than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas. Additionally, producing biogas through anaerobic digestion reduces odors and produces nutrient-rich liquid fertilizer.

Infrastructure and Vehicle Availability

A variety of new, heavy-duty natural gas vehicles are available from U.S. original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). For availability, see the Alternative Fuel and Advanced Vehicle Search.

Fleets and consumers also have the option of reliably converting existing gasoline or diesel vehicles for natural gas operation using qualified system retrofitters. Qualified system retrofitters can economically, safely, and reliably convert many vehicles for natural gas operation. It is critical that all vehicle and engine conversions meet the emissions and safety regulations and standards instituted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the National Fire Protection Agency's NFPA 52 Vehicular Gaseous Fuel Systems Code, CSA Group's CSA/ANSI NGV 6.1 code, and state agencies like the California Air Resources Board.

Although the United States has an extensive natural gas distribution system in place, vehicle fueling infrastructure is limited. For this reason, many fleets choose to install their own natural gas fueling infrastructure, which can be costly, or partner with other fleets to establish shared infrastructure. Partnering on infrastructure this way has many benefits, such as reduced payback period and higher throughput, which often translates to lower fuel costs.

Illinois Automotive Repair Act - Customers’ Rights - (815 ILCS 306)

The Automotive Repair Act requires auto repair shops are required to make specific disclosures to consumers and prohibits certain unlawful practices.

NOTE: The law does not apply to repairs resulting from collisions, repairs under $100, or retail merchandise installed at a customer's request for a firm price where there is no diagnosis.

Required Disclosures

Before performing any repair work, repair shops must provide the consumer with a written estimate. Among other items, the estimate must include:

• charges for parts, labor, and diagnostic test

• description of parts

• disclosure of whether parts are new or used

• statement of whether repairs are required or suggested

• date, odometer reading, and length of time needed to repair vehicle (if more than one day)

• method for calculation of labor costs

Required Consumers' Rights

As a consumer, you have a right to a written estimate. It can be either:

• An itemized estimate separating parts and labor, which the shop cannot exceed by more than 10%; or

• A non-itemized estimate stating the total price for repair which the shop cannot exceed at all.

NOTE: Consumers may waive their right to an estimate. They may also authorize the shop to perform certain repairs at total costs not to exceed a certain dollar amount.

Invoices

A repair shop must provide a copy of the invoice to the consumer. Invoices shall indicate:

• itemized costs of parts and labor

• odometer reading

• warranties, if any

• total price

Lien Charges

The Automotive Repair Act prohibits facilities from asserting lien charges for any unauthorized repairs.

Payment Upon Pick-Up

Consumers may remove a vehicle from a facility upon paying for labor actually performed, parts actually installed, parts ordered specifically for consumer's car IF parts cannot be returned, and storage charges if disclosed to the consumer prior to repairs.

Signs

Auto repair shops must post customers' rights in a visible location. Remember, you are entitled by law to:

• Receive written estimate for repairs costing $100 or more unless waived or absent face-to-face contact;

• Authorize, orally or in writing, repairs which exceed the labor and parts estimated by more than 10% or the non-itemized limited price estimate

• Authorize repairs orally or in writing after leaving a vehicle with a repair facility without face-to-face contact between you and facility personnel

NOTE: If you have authorized repairs in accordance with the above, you must pay for the repair costs prior to driving away from the premises.

Non-Business Hours

If a consumer leaves a vehicle for repair before the shop opens, the facility must:

• Telephone consumer with a price quotation

• Obtain consumer's oral consent

• Prepare a written estimate

• Note on the estimate the name of the person authorizing the repairs and the date and time when consent was secured

Unforeseen Repairs

If the shop finds the total price will exceed the estimated price because of unforeseen circumstances, it must obtain the consumer's oral or written consent to proceed with repairs. When a consumer authorizes the shop to proceed with repairs over the telephone, the shop must note the date, time, name of person authorizing the service, the consumer's telephone number, and any additional costs on the estimate or invoice.

You may not see them, or know much about them, but engine belts are always working to keep your vehicle moving. Losing a belt can mean immediate trouble for the engine and a breakdown for you. To avoid being stranded, the non-profit Car Care Council recommends that motorists review the owner’s manual to ensure that belts are inspected and replaced at the proper intervals.

A vehicle’s belts are essential to the cooling, air conditioning and charging systems of the engine. Serpentine belts are used to turn the water pump, alternator, power steering and air-conditioning compressor. Older cars use V-belts for various accessories.

Always check serpentine and V-belts for looseness and their overall condition. Replace V-belts when cracked, frayed, glazed or showing signs of excessive wear. Noise in the belt system is a sign of wear and the smell of burnt rubber can indicate a slipping belt. When changing a serpentine belt, it is important to check all the components in the serpentine system as tensioners and pulleys wear at the same rate as the belt and should be inspected.

Typical serpentine belt replacement is 60,000 to 90,000 miles. Typical V-belt replacement is 40,000 to 50,000 miles. Replace timing belt per interval specified in the owner’s manual.

What is a CNG vehicle? They aren’t that common, but they're vehicles that are powered by natural gas instead of gasoline. The engine functions in the same way as a gasoline-powered combustion engine. Have you thought about what CNG fuel is?

Explaining CNG Engines

We explain step by step how your CNG vehicle breaks down natural gas into fuel:

1.) CNG is compressed to 3600 psi and enters the vehicle through the CNG fill receptacle.

2.) It flows into high-pressure cylinders located in or under the vehicle.

3.) For a bi-fuel NGV, the vehicle will operate on CNG vehicles until the fuel runs out; then, it will switch to gasoline until the CNG tank is refilled. A fuel selector on the dash permits the driver to manually override the system and switch between CNG or gasoline. A dedicated NGV operates solely on CNG.

4.) When needed the CNG leaves the cylinders and passes through the (PRD) pressure relief device and electric solenoid shut-off valve (Which stops the flow of CNG fuel when the engine is not running or in the case of a bi-fuel vehicle, gasoline is selected).

5.) The CNG fuel travels through a short high-pressure fuel line and enters a (10 micron) coalescent filter, which removes oil droplets and other contaminates from the CNG.

6.) The CNG now enters the pressure regulator, which reduces pressure from up to 3,600 psi to approximately 70 - 125 psi.

7.) The CNG flows through a low-pressure fuel line and enters the fuel rail, which supplies pressurized fuel to all the specially designed CNG fuel injectors.

8.) The CNG injectors inject the CNG into the engine’s cylinder intake valves.

9.) The ECM (electronic control module) controls the sequential multi-port fuel injection pulse widths or amount of CNG fuel the injectors inject into the engine. This system allows each cylinder’s injector to open just before the intake valve opens.

Lamb's Automotive Inc Is Permanently Closed

We are very sorry to report, that after 40 years shared with our customers, Lamb’s Automotive Inc. has permanently closed. A number of factors have recently converged and contributed to our closing:

1. Recent issues with Lake County Building and Zoning required alterations that we could not perform.

2. The impending sale of the building, that we are located in, has restricted our future within the building.

3. After already being shorthanded, last February we lost a technician due to health reasons and have been unable to find more than part time replacements, in spite of extensive and expensive efforts in recruiting.

4. My own personal health issues, at age 67, have restricted my activity in the shop.

We are very proud of the honest and quality service that we have offered, the relationships we have formed, and the bonds we have made with our customers over the years. We have customers that have come to us for 3 generations, and we thank you all for your loyalty and your trust.

As our part in that trust relationship, we felt an obligation to find another shop in the area to take care of our valued customers, so that you can continue to have that same peace of mind when getting your car repaired. We have found such a shop. They are local, honest, offer excellent service, and have a pricing structure similar to ours. They will not be selling you items that you don’t need, and will help establish priorities on those services that you do need. They will have access to your vehicle history with us. Natural Gas vs. Electric

Consider the four Cs – Cost, Capability, Cobalt, and Coal – when considering electric vehicles

Cost

Making promises is different than making product. If and when an electric heavy-duty option comes to market, what will it cost? Will it be cost prohibitive for most end users? Besides high vehicle technology costs, what about associated costs for the massive fleet charging infrastructure that will be required?

Capability

No commercially-available electric option exists for most high capacity needs. If and when electric technology does make it to the heavy-duty market, will it be able to carry an 80,000 pound load up a steep mountain pass at speed? It will likely take years of testing in real world applications to find out.

Cobalt

There is an extensive human cost to electrification, and it starts with cobalt, a needed element for new battery technology. The typical electric car requires between 10 and 20 pounds of cobalt. Imagine the need for a single Class 8 truck.

Over 50 percent of the world’s cobalt comes from the Republic of Congo. So instead of being beholden to Middle East oil, we’ll be beholden to rare earths from other not so stable places. The worst conditions affect Congo’s “artisanal” miners; many of whom are children. A 2012 UNICEF study estimated that 40,000 boys and girls do so in the country’s south alone.

Artisanal mining does not involve the use of pneumatic drills or diesel draglines, and this informal army of miners is responsible for an estimated 10 to 25 percent of the world’s cobalt production and about 17 to 40 percent of production in Congo.

Coal

Not all electricity is the same, or even clean. Today approximately 400 coal-powered electric plants continue to generate around 30 percent of America’s electricity. Coal accounts for more than 50 percent of power generated in 13 states.

Time of charging also matters. While the wind often blows at nighttime, it is also when utilities are most likely to run only their coal-first power plants.

Life-cycle emissions matter too

We can’t continue to compare all vehicles merely by the tailpipe. According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, it takes so much energy to make batteries that battery electric vehicles (BEVs) with a 250-mile range start out life with a carbon footprint 68 percent higher than a piston-engine car.

What Happens to Spent Vehicle Batteries?

Unlike China and the European Union, the landfilling of depleted electric vehicle batteries is not forbidden in the United States. Battery recycling is not required.

Battery capacity certainly varies, greatly impacting battery life. Most light-duty EV manufacturers provide warranties for excessive battery loss. High temperatures, overcharging, deep discharges, and high discharges can all affect overall battery life.

Is the Electric Grid Ready?

There is a significant infrastructure gap when evaluating forecasted electric vehicle use and powering requirements. And different sized vehicles and required charge times require different charging needs.

Up to 5.5 million charge ports will be required by 2025 to accommodate expected plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) needs. A Navigant estimate puts the total number of installed charging ports today – including private at-home and at-work and public locations – at only 475,000.

Most electric utilities are unprepared to meet this expected demand.

According to research by the Smart Electric Power Alliance (SEPA), expected future growth of EV usage could severely impact current residential and commercial electric distribution. And as electrification of the transportation sector moves from individual ownership of light-duty cars and trucks to more commercial fleets and eventually heavy-duty applications, issues could become even more “amplified.”

There is a massive gap between expected EV charging demand and the EV infrastructure needed to accommodate it. SEPA’s recent survey concluded that 75 percent of all electric utilities in the United States have taken “little action” to meet expected future demand in terms of grid capacity and distribution needs.

Natural gas powers more than 150,000 vehicles on America’s roads today and more than 15.2 million roads worldwide. There are 1,700 natural gas fueling stations in the United States, with more coming on line every month. And with affordable and abundant supplies of natural gas ready to meet a growing demand in the transportation sector, consumer choices are increasing with the continued introduction of passenger cars and trucks built to run on natural gas.

The Benefits of Natural Gas as a Transportation Fuel

The benefits for natural gas as a transportation fuel are similar to its benefits when used in power generation – it’s clean, reliable and affordable.

For example, marine vessels powered by natural gas are able to meet new stringent emissions requirements without investments in expensive control technologies because they operate cleaner than traditional marine fuel engines. Those same benefits extend beyond the air we breathe and include lifecycle savings through reduced fuel costs and lower operating and maintenance costs as well.

Moving America: Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)

Today’s trucks, ships, trains and other high-horsepower equipment are capable of running on LNG, and fleet managers of all kinds are turning to this fuel to reduce emissions and operating costs.

LNG is natural gas that is super cooled and, as the name suggests, turned from a gaseous to liquid state. The resulting product has a volume that is roughly 1/600th of its original size, which allows it to be stored and transported.

Where Natural Gas is Being Used for Transportation Today

Here are just a few examples of how natural gas is changing America’s transportation sector:

Consumer Vehicles

Automakers including Ford and Honda are making natural gas vehicles available to consumers. With more than 1,200 stations nationwide, it’s getting easier for owners to hit the road with cleaner, dependable and affordable natural gas powering their ride.

Commercial Fleets

UPS, the world’s largest package-delivery service, operates one of the nation’s largest natural gas vehicle (NGV) fleets, and in 2016 announced plans to build an additional 12 compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling stations and add 380 new CNG tractors to its growing alternative fuel and advanced technology fleet. The CNG fueling stations and vehicle purchases totaling $100 million are part of UPS’s ongoing commitment to diversify its fuel sources and reduce its environmental impact.

Government Fleets

Visitors to the majestic Grand Canyon can view the National Park while riding shuttle buses powered by natural gas.

Public Transit

Los Angeles runs 2,200 CNG-powered buses every day. The city reports reducing particulates 80 percent, cutting greenhouse gases by 300,000 pounds per day, and saving nearly 20 percent on fuel versus its previous diesel fleet.

Marine Vessels

The world’s first fully liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered container ships are being built by shipping firm TOTE right here in America. The ships will help the company drastically reduce emissions, by up to 97 percent for pollutants like sulfur.

What is Propane Gas?

Propane is a portable, clean and efficient energy source which supplies about four percent of total U.S. energy needs. It is a byproduct of natural gas processing and petroleum refining, and exists as both a liquid and a gas.

Propane is sometimes referred to as liquified petroleum gas, LP gas, or LPG . About 90 percent of our propane is produced in America, making it a stable, domestic energy source. It is nontoxic, colorless and virtually odorless – but, for your protection, odor is added so it can be easily detected when necessary. The chemical odorant that is added is called ethyl mercaptan, which has a strong smell similar to rotten eggs.

Is propane clean?

Yes, propane is one of the cleanest burning fossil fuels. It creates less pollution, providing all of us with cleaner, more breathable air. It is also up to 99% efficient.

Propane is a valuable alternative to electricity and significantly reduces emission of greenhouse gases.

What are some of the benefits of propane?

Propane is a portable fuel that is used all around the world. It is used in transportation, commercial business, industry, farming, domestic heating and cooking, and for recreational purposes such as camping.

Compact and easy to transport, propane is delivered to the most remote areas of a community, as well as local neighborhoods that don’t have access to natural gas.

Almost 47% of the global demand for propane comes from residential cooking and heating demands. Nearly 10% of total propane consumption comes from the autogas sector – autogas is propane when used as a vehicle fuel.
