5 Tips To Help You Properly Wash Your Car Engine

Maintaining your vehicle is important, especially in essential areas like the engine. Cleaning your engine may be a hassle when it’s dirty, but some tricks will make the process go smoothly. Use these tips to help you wash your car engine and give it a refreshed look before hitting the road.

Remove Any Dry or Loose Materials

Some loose debris may be on top or around the engine. Remove this material before you add any liquid to the surface.

Use a thin hand brush and dustpan to collect and throw the debris away. Perform the sweep twice to ensure you collected as much as possible.

Tightly Cover the Electric Parts

The electric parts connected to the engine, such as the battery or alternator, require protection from the water and fluids you’ll use on the engine. Protect these components by covering them with plastic bags or plastic wrap.

Make sure the layer of plastic is tight to prevent droplets from getting inside. After you finish the wash, wait until the plastic is completely dry before removing it, as water may have pooled on the surface and could splash on an electrical component.

Don’t Use a Scrubber

While it’s tempting to use a strong, bristly tool to get rid of the dirt and grime faster, you may cause damage to the engine. Avoid using tools like a steel brush or scrubber that would scratch the engine’s metal.

Properly washing your car engine should involve careful application since it’s a valuable part of the vehicle. Although a scratched engine isn’t dangerous, it’s not pleasurable to look at, and it will cost you if you want those scratches buffed out. Use a cloth to clean the engine, and if you need to use more force on the spot to remove the grease or dirt, add more degreaser or soap.

Combine Wiping and Air Drying

It’s not wise to let the water sit on top of the metal surface of the engine, and air drying may take too long, depending on the moisture in the air. Combine air drying and cloth drying for an efficient drying process.

Wipe the excess moisture with a microfiber cloth and soak up the liquid without leaving particulates behind. Allow the thinner layer of moisture left on the surface to air dry as you put away your materials for a simpler method of drying out the engine.

Follow the Instructions for Soap or Degreaser

You’ll need to follow the instructions on the back of the bottle for the best result, whether you use soap or degreaser. Both fluids will break down the dirt and grease on the engine and make it easier to wipe away. But you’ll need to leave them on the surface for a certain period for them to take effect.

Follow the instructions and don’t be hasty. Use as much substance as recommended in the directions and follow the instructions when reapplying the solution for a stubborn spot.
